Legislation & Policy

2026 Bike & Trail Lobby Day
2026%20Bike_Trail%20Lobby%20Day_Group%20Photo.jpg

Friday, April 17 was affectionately referred to as “Deadline Day” – the third reading deadline for legislators in both the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives to pass bills out of the chamber in which they originated. It was also the date of Ride Illinois’ 2026 Bike & Trail Lobby Day. Thanks to all who join us in Springfield to meet with their legislators to discuss important legislation and topics. Many constructive conversations were held over the course of one action-packed day!

The Latest from Springfield

Infrastructure

Project Spotlight: Englewood Nature TrailEnglewood%20Nature%20Trail.png

The proposed Englewood Nature Trail project is the result of extensive public input that in 2014 led to the Chicago Plan Commission's adoption of the Green Healthy Neighborhoods Plan, which envisions the trail serving as the spine of an urban agriculture district that occupies adjacent land, along with other productive uses. The rail line runs east-west along an elevated berm, crossing 26 viaducts. After years of waiting, Chicago will soon break ground on a new 1.8-mile 'nature trail in the sky' on the south side.

Article: Painted Bike Lanes on Dangerous Roads
Momentum%20Magazine%20Article_030326.jpg

For millions of Americans, it's not only that bike lanes in their community don't feel safe, they often aren't safe. A new study in the Journal of Cycling and Micromobility Research puts data behind that discomfort, finding that roughly 61% of paint-only bike lanes in the United States are located on “high-stress” roads — fast, multi-lane corridors where traffic speed and volume make riding uncomfortable for most people.

Book Recommendation: There are No Accidents
Tailwinds%20Book%20Recommendation_April%202026.png

This book has been out for a few years, but remains relevant. In this revelatory book, Jesse Singer tracks accidental death in America from turn of the century factories and coal mines to today’s urban highways, rural hospitals, and Superfund sites. Drawing connections between traffic accidents, accidental opioid overdoses, and accidental oil spills, Singer proves that what we call accidents are hardly random. Rather, who lives and dies by an accident in America is defined by money and power.
